<rant> I work for a physician in the United States. Today, one of my patients is a hefty woman… That’s right I said hefty, because in America we are all about ‘PC’. We don’t like to say mean things to people or about them at least in public. The PC self-control works when the person has no control over their condition. The sorts of things I mean deal with race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, and so on. But this woman is hefty and by that I mean FAT, disgustingly, morbidly, F-ing FAT. She could barely breathe and she looked ill. I felt bad for this woman. I want her to be well! Still a person so obese just isn’t going to be healthy.
This is a major problem in the United States. More so here than any place else. If we have any hopes of reforming our healthcare systems we must also attempt to reduce the amount of obesity in this country. No privately or publically funded medical institutions can tolerate such a drain. It is not fair to the rest of us who try to maintain some sort of level of fitness or healthy diet.
A Candian friend told me that you may have to search high and low to find products with high-fructose corn syrup. Is it so much to ask for the government to step in and prevent certain things from being sold to protect the public health? They do it with drugs. Why not control food that are so unnatural that they are inherently unhealthy?
The drain on healthcare isn’t the only concern regarding Fat America.

The other problem is THIS american-flag shirt wearing person. It’s someone like this who apparently represents what an “American” is to people all over the world. And that, my friends, really grinds my gears! There are many Americans who like this country, but do NOT parade around acting like their culture is right, and everyone else’s culture is just plain wrong.
On top of that though, doesn’t anyone else find it embaressing to know that when people in Europe think of us (or US) they think of a fat slob who is intollerant of others? Grr. </rant>
It’s depressing, ain’t it. Corn is not a healthy food additive for humans and it is in EVERYthing. That, and portions on American plates (and boxes) are out of control.
Meanwhile, people are starving in other countries because there’s a shortage of corn because corn is also being turned into biofuel.
Now personally, I think we’d be healthier if we consumed less corn based slop but the ethanol technology is not efficient. It costs more fuel to make it than it gives back in energy. Does that make any sense?
